It was at the 1988 British Motor Show that the sensational Jaguar XJ220 concept prototype was first revealed to the public, a lightweight two seater with a mid-mounted V12 engine designed as a modern day successor to the XJ13 sports-racing prototype of 1966. With a 6.2 litre, quadruple overhead camshaft, four valve per cylinder, 500bhp motor developed by Tom Walkinshaw Racing, an FF Developments four wheel drive system and an immense but svelte bonded aluminium body designed by Keith Helfets clothing an aluminium/honeycomb monocoque, it was the ultimate supercar, a limited edition, 200mph plus piece of pure automotive sculpture - the 220 part of the name denoted the targeted top speed - that the following year would be officially given a price tag of no less than £361,000. Predictably, orders and the mandatory £80,000 deposits flooded in from all corners of the world.
When the production version was shown to the public in October 1991, however, there were significant mechanical changes compared to the prototype of three years earlier, the V12 having been substituted by an also TWR-developed, twin turbocharged, four overhead camshaft, four valve per cylinder, 3.5 litre version of the MG Metro 6R4 Group B rally car's all alloy V6 engine, and the four wheel drive-train having been dropped in favour of rear wheel drive via a five speed transaxle; the price had also jumped significantly to a huge £403,000.
Producing an impressive 549bhp at 7,000rpm and 473lb.ft at 4,500rpm, the now slightly shorter (by some 10 inches courtesy of the smaller dimensions of the V6 engine against the bulky V12), but still with a not inconsiderable girth of six feet and six inches, the XJ220 proved more than capable of reaching its target maximum speed: in 1992 at the Italian Nardo test track Formula One and sportscar ace Martin Brundle recorded 212.3mph around the banking in standard trim and 217.1mph with the catalytic converters disconnected, the latter speed equivalent to 223mph on a straight road. Combined with 0-60mph acceleration in a brutal 3.5 seconds the XJ220 was indisputably the fastest road car on the planet, and thanks to racing developed inboard wishbone suspension and huge ventilated disc brakes with four piston calipers, it held the road beautifully and stopped equally as well. Production of the car began the following year at a purpose-built factory at Bloxham in Oxfordshire with the first cars delivered in July to, amongst other well known names, Elton John and the Sultan of Brunei.
On the race track, the Jaguar also proved highly effective: in the competition version, the XJ220C, another sportscar ace, Win Percy, took victory on the car's race debut in the BRDC National Sports GT Challenge, and in the 1993 Le Mans 24 Hours John Nielsen and Davids Brabham and Coulthard finished first in the GT class, though only for their XJ220C to be subsequently disqualified over a spurious technical infringement.
Although production numbers for the exclusive Jaguar had been set at a maximum of 350, due to a collapse in demand for supercars, allied to legal proceedings instigated by enthusiast buyers as well as speculators who had ordered the XJ220 on the basis of its original V12, four wheel drive specification, ultimately just 281 examples of what remains one of the most desirable cars in the world were ever built.
Astonishingly, given the XJ220's driveability and mile eating capabilities, this example has covered a mere 156 miles, having been delivered, after completion on August 10 1993, to a buyer in Singapore on January 19 the following year where it was immediately put into storage. There it remained for 10 years before it returned to Great Britain prior to comprehensive re-commissioning work by Jaguar specialist Don Law in May 2004. This included removal of the engine, fitment of new valve springs, timing belts, head gaskets and later type camshaft cover gaskets, a new Teflon-lined bag fuel tank, new internal low pressure fuel pumps and filters; a full six year service also included fitment of a new clutch assembly, release bearing and slave cylinder, a new camshaft spigot bearing, distributor drive bush, rotor arm and cap, new spark plugs, air-conditioning drier bottle and wiper blade, replacement of all fluids and filters and a replenished air conditioning system. In addition, the transaxle and steering system were cleaned and checked, while the brakes were given the factory upgrade of twin high boost servos, higher specification brake discs, pads and master cylinder; an improved factory exhaust system was also fitted and the car fully road tested.
Finished in Monza Red with grey leather interior, this stunning Jaguar is thus presented in absolutely mint condition. Complete with a Production Record Trace from the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust, a letter from Don Law detailing the re-commissioning work, an MoT test certificate valid until October, and complete with the original toolkit, this is surely an opportunity to acquire what must be the finest XJ220 available anywhere in the world, a spectacular, seriously capable British supercar that has to be at the top of any genuine collector's wish list.
