Jaguar pitched their XJ220 supercar directly at the Ferrari F40 and the Porsche 959, competing for the same super-rich and discerning top car buyers - a very exclusive group indeed. The idea was hatched by Jim Randle, Jag's Head of Engineering, who after masterminding four years of very secret development work, unveiled the sensational XJ220 prototype at the 1988 Birmingham Show. The prototype was powered by a 530bhp 48-valve V12 with four-wheel drive.
However, following the Ford takeover of Jaguar in 1988, XJ220 production was entrusted to Tom Walkinshaw's Jaguar Sport division at Bloxham, Oxon, in 1992. The V12 was replaced with a more practical to produce twin-turbo V6 of 3.5-litre capacity, which had been developed in the Group C XJR-10 race programme and was just as powerful. Also, the original four-wheel drive set-up on the prototype was changed to two-wheel drive transmission.
Sir Elton John's car has 57 on the door kickplates, confirming that the pop legend was the 57th customer to order an XJ220. His was built during July 1992 and, with his required dark metallic blue paint and grey interior, was delivered to him 9 September of that year. When production was finally stopped by recession and the Ford accountants, just 80 XJ220s to righthand drive specification had been completed.
During his 850 miles of high profile tenancy, however, the Elton John XJ220 did hit the papers with what was actually a very minor incident, when, returning from tennis, the star clipped some roadworks cones. The damage was only superficial, though, and was sorted out at the Jaguar factory, who, along with Elton's loyal fettlers Weybridge Automobiles, were the only workshops allowed to touch this or any of the other molly-coddled cars in his collection.
Since acquisition from the thinning auction of the superstar's extraordinary cache of fine vehicles, the 1992-manufactured 220 on offer has only been driven a further 104 miles, making the total mileage when entered for this sale a mere 1023 miles.
The 3498cc engine, a double overhead camshaft, four valves per cylinder, twin turbocharged, V6 with alloy heads and block, which produces a whopping 542bhp at 6500rpm is, of course, really barely run-in and is therefore ready and waiting to deliver its true potential. The same goes for the five-speed, all-synchromesh box with triple cone synchroniser on first and second gears to withstand vertical takeoffs.
The independent suspension is by unequal length wishbones and inboard coil springs with dampers and anti-roll bars. Four pot calipers grasp AP Racing brake discs, which are ventilated and cross-drilled, should keep you out of trouble. Truly awesome gear, in fact, all of which will deliver 0-100mph times in under 8sec!
The vendor tells us that the car still has an Alpine amp and CD multicharger installed, as required to boost ICE output and choice for its former pop star owner. We understand, too, that a service has been carried out by Jaguar Sport at the Browns Lane factory. The overall condition of this, the ultimate British supercar to top all supercars is apparently absolutely fabulous. If you are thinking of adding an XJ220 to your collection, then thus has to be the one to buy. No wonder Sir Elton called this big beauty `The Beast'. Tame it...if you dare!

    As at 30th Nov 2009
This car is up for sale for £100,000
The current owner of 5 years,
When Eltons collection of cars were sold off this one was purchased by a Museum, then sold to a gent in Swadlingcote,
But neither refistered in their names,
So is now being legaly sold as a one previous owner.
The current owner put a privare Reg plate on, but when he removed same DVLA supplied an age related # rather than the original????

Car to return to auction 6/10

This special Jaguar XJ220 was supplied in November 1992 by Jaguar Sport Ltd in Banbury and bought new by one Sir Elton John CBE. The log book shows delivery of the car then sporting the license plate K68 WWL being made to William A Bong Ltd, the company name used by Sir Elton as confirmed in the personal letter from him included in the cars history file.

The car remained in this ownership until it was famously auctioned at the Christie's automobile sale on 5th June 2001 showing just 900 miles. The car was successfully sold, and the new owner cared for the car meticulously accruing fewer than 67 miles in his first year of ownership. The third and last registered keeper of K410 UJC acquired the car in April 2004, and a documented timeline of services brings the car to its current accurate mileage of only 2963 miles.

Today, this right hand drive car is presented in its original and eye-catching Le Mans Blue paintwork and as-new Grey interior with alpine stereo and all original instruments. Aside from its physical size, what strikes you most about this awesome example of automotive history are the sleek lines, indented door handles and the now hugely-recognisable grey wheels which plant the long base to the tarmac.

Despite its aging years, the Jaguar XJ220 still manages to look extremely modern, and it's impossible to find an unflattering angle from which to view the car. Sir Elton John affectionately referred to this car as The Beast and sites the 'incredible' vehicle as benefitting from 'stunning looks', 'power' and recalls that the car "doesn't behave well in traffic, but its great on the motorway".

We suggest that this car represents a safe buy in today's market as ultra low examples of cars with such healthy provenance will always remain attractive to a plethora of motor vehicle enthusiasts. K410 UJC is as good as we've seen, and the accompanying history file houses the paperwork to prove it.
