Model history
After its multiple successes at Le Mans in the 80s, Jaguar decided to use their knowledge gained in racing to launch their own supercar and it appeared in the form of the XJ220 prototype at the Birmingham Auto Show of 1988. It featured a V12, fuel injected 48 valve 530bhp engine and was fitted with four wheel drive. When Ford acquired Jaguar in 1989, the project was entrusted to Tom Walkinshaw's Jaguar Sport division and a new power unit was adopted in the form of a twin turbo 3.5 litre V6 engine driving the rear wheels, providing acceleration of 0-100 km/h in under 4 seconds and a top speed of around 340 km/h. Production started in 1992. Built on a fine honeycomb aluminium chassis, the all aluminium bodywork was available in one of five metallic colours and list price was £403,000.
